Baby boom in the Year of the Dog

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-07 14:24:59

Chinanews, Feb. 7 - Based on the folk hearsay that "those who are born in
the year of the golden dog can obtain whatever they want," it is believed
that children born in 2006, which is regarded as the year of the golden
dog once in a century, will enjoy good luck all their lives. Therefore,
many expectant mothers in Liaoning's Shenyang City prefer to deliver
their babies in the Year of the Dog.
On Feb. 4th, some hospitals in Shenyang revealed that the number of
babies born during this Spring Festival jumped remarkably compared with
that in the previous two years.
32-year-old Mr. Zang became a dad on the first day of this Chinese New
Year and nicknamed his daughter Dudu. In the delivery room of the
hospital, Mrs. Zang said that she especially chose that day to give birth
to her baby by way of Caesarean birth because the elderly told her that
children born in the Year of the Dog are generally brilliant. After
consulting with her family members, she decided to bring her baby to the
world on the first day of the Chinese New Year.
However, doctors advise young couples that medically speaking, the theory
that children born in the Year of the Dog are clever is totally
groundless. Moreover, if too many babies are born in the same year, they
will face fiercer competition in terms of school enrolment and employment.

Judging China's "monetary" future with statistics

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-02 11:38:40

China's 2005 economic operation was a perfect coda to the new century's
first Five-year Plan (2001-2005), thanks to the pull of the "triple
locomotives" of investments, consumption and exports. In particular,
external trade continued its rapid growth. The netting of imports and
exports left China with a trade surplus exceeding US$100 billion; 2005
actual utilized foreign direct investment amounted to US$60.3 billion.
Although this was a slight decline of 0.5% compared to the previous year,
when one add on top of this figure investments in the financial,
insurance and securities industries, actual utilized foreign capital
still exceeded US$70 billion, a very respectable figure. From this one
can see that the international community and global multinationals are
still very enthusiastic about investing in China.
It was learned that by 2005 year-end, Chinese private savings totaled
10.1 trillion RMB, rising by 2.1 trillion over the previous year. Folk
wisdom says that the heart never panics with money in hand. Despite
certain reservations about such high savings rates held by some
economists, such vast savings in the hands of Chinese urban and rural
dwellers put a safety mat under their feet and allow them to have more
room to maneuver in case of difficulties.
The year 2006 is the beginning of China's "Eleventh Five-Year Plan".
Although unfavorable conditions such as fundamentally weak earnings for
farmers, inadequate growth rates in rural incomes and unrefined modes of
economic growth still exist, China's "monetary" future remains bright,
based on the fine foundations built in previous years.

China, US to discuss nuke issues

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-20 10:48:49

(Source: China Daily)

BEIJING, Jan.20 - US Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick is
expected to visit China next week amid continuing international concerns
over the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and disputed nuclear
programmes in Iran.
During his three-day visit starting Monday, Zoellick will meet Chinese
officials to exchange views on China-US relations and on major
international issues, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said at a
regular news briefing yesterday.
"I look forward to a good exchange of views in Beijing on security and
proliferation issues particularly in Northeast Asia and Iran, among other
topics," Zoellick was quoted by AFP as saying.
Another point of discussion is preparations for the third China-US
strategic dialogue, which both sides have agreed to hold in the first
half of this year, Kong said.
Both China and the US are important stakeholders in the international
community and it will benefit both sides to listen to each other's views,
Zoellick was quoted by China News Service as saying, adding maintaining
contacts with China is very important.
A meeting between US envoy Christopher Hill and DPRK's negotiator Kim
Kye-gwan was held in Beijing on Wednesday following a proposal by China.
Chinese negotiator Wu Dawei also joined the meeting.
"The meeting showed a positive attitude toward the resumption of the
Six-Party Talks," Kong said.
The talks had been at the top of the agenda during a recent visit by DPRK
leader Kim Jong-il to China.
"During his meeting with President Hu Jintao, both leaders said the talks
were the best way to make the Korean Peninsula nuclear-free and said they
were prepared to continue them," Kong said.

China losses heavily in soil erosion

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-27 10:48:29

Chinanews, Dec. 27 C The Ministry of Water Resources published a report
Monday on Chinas soil erosion status in 2004. According to the report,
Chinas soil erosion reached 1.622 billion tons in the year, which
equals to one centimeter of soil loss covering a land of 125,000 square
kilometers. The problem is most serious in the Yangtze River and the
Yellow River region, with soil erosion reaching 932 million and 491
million tons respectively.
The report covered soil erosion status for eleven main river areas in
China and the result showed that most of the provinces and municipalities
had soil erosion problem to some extend, with the problem being most
serious in the Yangtze River region, the Yellow River region, the black
soil region in northeast and the Pearl River region in south China.
The report showed that the problem occurred most at the slopes of the
arable lands. Meanwhile, construction activities attributed heavily to
the problem. As China speeds up its process of industrialization and
urbanization, many construction projects on infrastructure were
undertaken and these projects damaged land surface and vegetative cover
by producing a lot of waste soil.
According to the Ministry of Water Resources, soil erosion is one of the
big environmental problems existing in China. China is one of the
countries in the world with most serious soil erosion problem and more
than two million square kilometers of lands in the country need to tackle
the problem of soil erosion.

China shows cultural power in the world

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-26 15:10:38

Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 26 (By Ying Ni)C In recent years, Chinese
culture has witnessed a period of prosperity on world stage as
illuminated by a series of large cultural events held both home and
abroad.
On October 1, 2005, China unveiled a month-long cultural event at the
Kennedy Center in the United States. The event, the Festival of China, is
said to be the biggest one in the American history and attracted numerous
U.S. celebrities in all circles. Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin
Powell arrived on time and watched the Peking Opera and Chinese
acrobatics at the Kennedy Center, where twenty-six years ago, the then
Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping listened to a popular Chinese song, I love
the Tian'anmen Square, performed by a chorus consisting 200 American
children.
Meanwhile, China kicked off the Sino-French cultural year event in 2003,
which acted as a mechanism for cultural exchanges between the two states.
As part of the grand event, the Chinese culture year was held in France
from October 2003 to July 2004 and a similar event was held in China for
the French culture year between October 2004 and July 2005.
Apart from state-level exchanges, Chinese language has also become hot
throughout the world. In July 2005, China organized a world forum on
Chinese language, the first time ever for the country to hold such forum.
At the same time, China is carrying out its plan of setting up 100
Confucius Institutes around the world while more than 100 million people
are believed to learn the Chinese language. To some westerners, the
resurgence of the Confucius is the renaissance of the traditional Chinese
culture and some even deemed that his idea of the "Datong World" came
true in an era of the globalization.
While foreigners crave Chinese language, institutions and clubs related
with traditional culture also thrive domestically, which reflects
people's nostalgic feeling about tradition. During this time, the name of
a great Chinese sailor, Zheng He was brought to light with much attention
as this year marked the 600th anniversary of his great voyage. To
commemorate this great sailor, the U.S. National Geographic magazine
listed him as one of the distinguished explorers over the past 1,000
years. He was also the only one in Asia to be named on the list.
And equally important, the Chinese authority celebrated the 60th
anniversary of the victory over Japanese aggression. For the first time,
the Chinese authority announced the significance of the Yunnan-Burma road
and the air corridor from India to China, which played an important role
in China's fight against Japanese during the Second World War. It is also
the first time that China viewed the significance of the anti-Japanese
war from a world perspective.
While history played an important part in 2005, a television show called
"super voice girl" also made its hit throughout China and the U.S. Time
magazine put the winner Li Yuchun on its cover page.
However, the year 2005 also saw some masters passing away. Chinese
mathematician, Professor Chen Xingshen, great scholar and socialist Fei
Xiaotong, Chinese calligrapher Qi Gong and literal master Ba Jin died in
the year, which is a great loss to China's cultural circle.

Chinas first cyber doctor start working

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-16 17:22:46

Chinanews, Dec. 16 C The first cyber family doctor service in China
kicks off in Hangzhou on Thursday after two months of operation in trial
basis.
The cyber doctor service is actually a platform that links patients
and doctors via internet and mobile communication technology. About 100
professors and associate professors from famous local hospitals in
Zhejiang work in the cyber medical center.
An expert in charge of health from Zhejiang University, Han Honglu said
there were three phone numbers available in the center. By dialing
960520, people can consult experts, on a one-to-one basis, for
information on health. If they want to make an appointment with a doctor,
they can dial 960521. And the number 960522 assists patients in
services like doctor guide and paying medical fees and getting medicines
for patients. It can also help patients to find nursing staff.
Experts said that at present, many patients went to the hospitals for
treatment. However, not every one needs to do so. If some problems are
resolved via phone, it can save doctors' time and make best use of expert
resources. This can ease the problem of medical shortage and allocate the
doctor resources more rationally.
